Senior Years Report Term 3 2019

Christine Taylor

HEAD OF SENIOR YEARS

IB Learner Profile – As IB Learners we strive to be: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk- takers, Balanced and Reflective.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a new concept in Senior Years but we have embraced it this year and are making every attempt to live it. Our aim is that students take the 10 attributes of the IB MYP Learner Profile (please see above) beyond Year 10 and into their VCE studies and beyond. Our prayer is, that we develop and encourage globally minded citizens who wish to have an impact on local, state, national and global communities.

One of the Learner Profiles is Risk Taking, which encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and become courageous with their choices and actions and we have seen evidence of many students taking risks and growing through their experiences this year. Recently we had the musical, Once on this Island, which was a wonderful production in every respect but was also extremely challenging for the cast, as they were all onstage throughout the performance, which called for them being in character all of the time. Performance is challenging at any time but the way the cast and crew embraced the challenge and put themselves on the line, was inspiring. They also displayed inquiring minds, thought deeply about what was being asked of them, communicated clearly with staff and peers and were open minded in terms of dramaturgy but most of all they treated every member of the production team with absolute positive regard.

Another example of risk taking, was the Year 11 Presentation Ball, which was a fantastic evening in every respect. The Presentation ‘set’ displayed the same attributes as those of the musical cast and crew. IB attributes in action.

Future Pathways are crucial to consider in our ever evolving world. Colleges are challenged by the fact that we are preparing students for professions that do not actually exist at the moment and some students will have up to eight or more careers in their lifetime. We are very mindful of these factors when careers counseling our students, parents and caregivers at GNLC. Term three is always busy with information evenings in preparation for student subject choices for the following year. Those choices have now been made (students can change their subject preferences, should they wish to, right up to week two, term one 2020) and all are back to the work in hand for 2019. This is the start of the student transition process into the big wide world beyond GNLC.

Year 12 trial examinations are almost with us and we are rapidly approaching the time when we say goodbye to The Class of 2019. This is a stage of reflection, memories and celebration and a time to remember that:

Joshua 1:9: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
